What are “Vintage” photos?

I was surprised to learn the word “vintage” can have three different meanings in the world of photos. When purchasing photos on-line, at an art show or flea market this is good information to have so when a seller tells you a photo is vintage – you aren’t getting something entirely different than you expect. The missing link in your photo history.

Old photos are wonderful, exciting glimpses into the past and our history. However, an important part of the story is often overlooked: the negative.  The early photographs were daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tin types which were photographic positives, meaning they were one of a kind. Without a negative, copies could not be made. Another original had to be taken. Other processes were tried but not commercially viable. New Magnetic Photo Albums vs. Old Style

It wasn’t so long ago that everyone was saving their photos in harmful photo albums with pre-glued pages and vinyl overlays. Now people are finding their pictures ruined from vinyl sweating caused by moisture being trapped in the pages as well as the photos permanently glued to the pages. What can be done? There is nothing haunting about these images. It’s a nice mixture of loving old couples, children, some Post-Mortem photos and some lovely smiles towards the end.

I do like these photos – I’m just not sure what emotion I feel looking at them. Are the people to posed? Is there too much room showing? One thing for sure – their methods of picture hanging needs some improvement.
