Card Collector Tales #1: “The Find”

We’ve asked some of our customers to tell us their tales of collecting. Below is an account that every collector dreams of having. The outcome, not so much. Read on to see for yourself.

I was a kid back in the late ’80’s and had just gotten into collecting baseball cards. My dad was never a collector, neither was my uncle or older brother. None of my family was really into collecting cards. There were some kids at school though.

They took me after school to the card shops in town and within a few weeks I was hooked. This was back when kids could go all over the place without an adult being present.

One day, after school, a friend and I rode our bikes to what had become my favorite hobby shop. I picked up a pack of Bowman and my friend, a pack of Topps.

While we were chewing our gum and looking through our cards my friend got excited. I was startled to see that he was excited about my cards. I didn’t understand why as I didn’t think I had anything good, but what happened next has haunted me to this day.

He offered to give me his entire pack for just one of the cards I had just pulled. The card being Bowman ’89’s Ken Griffey Jr.

Not really knowing who Griffey was at the time, I agreed. One card for an entire pack? You’d have to be a loony to pass up an offer like that, especially when you’re 9!

I can say with all honesty that the pain of that trade has never went away. These days I have a few copies of that card in my collection, but none of them will ever be as good as the one I gave up.

Ouch! Have a collecting tale you’d like to share with us? Awesome! You can either leave a comment, send an email or leave us a Facebook message! Please make sure to indicate if you wish to remain anonymous. We look forward to hearing from you!
